If you're lucky enough to find a three word keyword (phrase) that is not so saturated with competition then target that. Otherwise, expand your search to four word (and more) keyword phrases.

Play holdem poker online 4 word keyword
Play poker online 3 word keyword
Holdem poker online hmm 3 word keyword

From this, I can really see that keyword research can be time consuming...

How does keyword research take a lot of time? You know your industry and niche well so you should already have an idea of what words could be good keywords. So enter those keywords into Google keyword tool and let it spin out endless variations of keywords.

You got a point there. But what if the keywords you chosen don't have good number of searches from SEs?

I'm assuming those new keywords would just be additional to what you're already using now. Just find some way to incorporate two or three of them of them into your next article or upcoming articles, using anchor text that links back to related articles on your blog.

Long tail keywords are narrow, they are less competitive and its easy to optimize. Long tail keywords mean when you use long keywords for example (Apple 8 GB ipod). It is easy to rank long tail keyword rather than short tail keyword.
