You said it had a slight long term positive effect. Could that be calculated like a percentage? Could you have achieved that in any other noticeable way with another technique? Was it using the software that provided the advantage or the places being submitted to (as in the number of sites/length of time the links stayed up)?

The problem is that most places where you do get a dofollow link will be spammed with comment spam after a while or shut down by the owner. That of course has got a discounting effect. Finding high PR pages and trying to get a link there may be the more effective way of doing things.

That's not to say that automated link building software doesn't help, one just needs to use it for link diversity and propping up the urls with backlinks to your site.

True. As for me, I prefer to use software that automates registration and supports auto-login feature, like Dino Browser. In all other cases it should act like an ordinary web browser. Such a way I can submit manually, control the overall process and still save some time.

Yes, by using automated linkbuilding you may penalized by Google. Automated techniques are not good for long term business. Manual linkbuilding provides business for a long period.

What are some techniques you could use for getting links on those high PR pages? Are we talking about blogs where you can leave a comment or sites where you buy a link on that page?

if you are still posting link manually in this cyber age, i guess your competitor will be very happy to take over your ranking.

use the technology in a logic way.

new site, dont blast 100-1000 direct links a day, then you will be fine.

i use senuke x, and setup the campaign with "SENUKE X FULL THROTTLE METHOD"

i am not doing it manually, i have automate the software with a robot.

Autometed, yes, autometed folks. In SEO, I tend to avoid anything automAted (that word's pretty similar to automatic, a morph of auto mating too), even dynamically generated web pages. Automats - automated link building machines (aka autolinkers, automats, backwards morphs to auto mats) are out of the question. So is content generators (congenetors) and any other Cookie-Cutter DOorway paGe-like uselessneSs (C-C DOGS). Then there's that new car's data input cross-dressing robot they're using now, the "automo-bi-tron". Maybe you're thinking about that?
I would, however, appreciate an automated microwave thingy; one that figures out exactly how much time and at what power level it needs to set itself in order to reach that hot yet not too googley-goo state inside my pizza pops for lunch today then serve it too me with a coupla' napkins.
