The best are from authority sites like wikipedia. High PR sites are great as well. Any link is good IMO.

On page optimization is very important task. Before jumping into off page optimization its important to have good on page optimization. Having a good on page SEO reduces the need to off page optimization.

You're right about that.
Once when i was working for a paid blog site, i went out and commented on other blogs and used that method exclusively to get links and traffic back to my blog articles and made very good money.

Since opening my own forum, i almost exclusively use signature links. Not just here but also on some other forums and we went from zero pr to pr 2 in three months. I think it must have worked.

I wasn't even trying to build links, just joined and up my sig link and started posting and now three months down the road, there are thousands of links out there leading back to my forum.

Though I don't have the biggest forum membership, traffic is really awesome, like through the roof.
