It means that you give people something that they want which boosts their ego. I recently read about this and also read a good example of how this works.
The example was those evaluate your website/domain bs sites.. You put in your domain name or website name and the tool tells you it is worth a boat load of cash and asks you if you want to put this value on your site so that the whole world can see how much your site is worth (or maybe how naive you are
).
The valuation site gets a link back from you and that would be their version of ego bait. Hope that helps

Apparently, Ego Baiting is something "Hot Chicks" have been doing all around the world... forever.
Ego Baiting is getting people to link back to you buy blogging or writing about their website/product very nicely. They then see this nice write-up and want to link back to it from their site to show their users what others are saying...
The most popular way of ego baiting that I am aware of is via domain appraisal tools.
It works like this:
1) you go to domain appraisal website
2) Type in your crappy domain that is worth no more than a cheap Sunday lunch
3) web 2.0 system thing ma jiggie tells you it is worth bucket loads of cash
4) web 2.0 system offers you a button to put on your site to show off to your friends
5) web 2.0 receives free publicity and a free link because you were dumb enough to believe the fake valuation

Post inflamatory or complimentary comment about another blogger and include link to their "blog". Either way they are likely to check out what you said about them and then link back to you to refute or praise your comments.

This might be similar to nerd baiting. Most times, to use nerd baiting you post a controversial blog post about a tech related product and then rip it up, saying negative things about it. And, you get many tech sites linking back to you. In that way, ego baiting works the same. It's just another way to entice people to link to you.
