GMail was a project started by Google developer Paul Buchect. Initially it was available only to Google employees and was available to the public on April 1st 2004.

Smart man, Rancid i believe they were in beta testing for more than 5 years. I'm not sure but i believe this was the real period.

There was most likely a team of hundreds, maybe thousands that participated in this project. I think they have certainly made a great piece of email software. It's great, and I'm proud to be a Gmail use. They are always including updates, and they are always improving their security. I think it is the safest type of email besides using a cPanel email.
