MUMBAI : The trend in natural gas futures for June delivery on India's Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is unclear and intra-day traders are advised to be cautious while taking positions.

“For intra-day, resistance for the commodity is seen at 238.5. If futures break this level, then prices may trade higher till 242 levels. Support for the natural gas is there at 231 and 228 levels,” said Tarang Parmar, Research Analyst at Commodity Online.

“Traders with risk appetite may take short position near 236 with stop loss above 239 and they may wait for the targets at 233 and 231 levels,” added Tarang.

MCX natural gas for May delivery has been trading in narrow range for the last two days and was seen trading up by 0.56% at Rs.234.70 per mmBtu as of 02.17 PM IST on Thursday.

On base metals, Chinese data is not very supportive and hence the outlook on the entire base metal pack, especially copper, looks little negative. We think that the prices will remain under pressure on the international markets as well as on the Indian market.

Since posting its biggest two-day loss in 30 years last month, bullion has struggled to recover, and last week suffered its longest string of daily losses in four years.

With April's low again looming, a breach could spark a significant move lower, according to analysts who study past price moves to determine the future direction of trade.

"If that gives way, it will attract fresh selling pressure. That impetus could see it break below USD 1,304 and down towards the USD 1,161 area," UBS technical strategist Richard Adcock said.

The spot price of gold, which early in the day threatened to test a 1-1/2-year low touched last month, was up USD 36 an ounce or 2.6 percent by 2010 GMT, snapping a seven-session losing streak.

Silver's most-active contract on COMEX, July, rose 2.3 percent to USD 22.86 an ounce in post-settlement trade, after closing the official session 1 percent higher at USD 22.582. That marked a sharp reversal for a market that just hours earlier fell to a September 2010 low of USD 20.25.

Investors have been dumping gold, which is down 20 percent so far this year, as stocks and the dollar continue to outperform. If gold closes in the red on Monday, it would match the metal's longest losing streak since March 2009.

"Investors are very bearish at the moment," said Yuichi Ikemizu, branch manager for Standard Bank in Tokyo. "The stock market and the dollar are quite strong. It's a natural move for investors to switch their money from commodities to equities."

Data showed Americans felt better about their economic and financial prospects in early May, with consumer sentiment at its highest in nearly six years, while a gauge of future economic activity rose in April to a near five-year high.

Spot gold hit a session low of USD 1,338.95 an ounce, its lowest since touching a two-year trough of USD 1,321.35 during the April 16 sell-off that was prompted by worries that European countries could liquidate gold reserves.
